Timing, Food and Why 'It Didn't Work' Is Often a Scheduling Problem

Before anyone concludes a medication doesn't work for them, it's worth checking the five things that most commonly sabotage it. Research on non-responders has repeatedly found that a substantial portion were simply using it incorrectly.
1. Timing
Sildenafil generally needs 30 to 60 minutes; tadalafil can take up to two hours to reach full effect. Taking it as things begin is too late. Plan the window rather than the moment.
2. Food
A large, high-fat meal significantly delays sildenafil absorption and can blunt the peak. Tadalafil is much less affected. If you've had a heavy dinner, expect a longer runway.
3. Alcohol
A drink or two is usually fine. Heavier drinking lowers blood pressure further, increases side effects and independently impairs erections — working directly against the medication.
4. Arousal
PDE5 inhibitors are permissive, not causative. Without sexual stimulation, nothing happens. Expecting an automatic erection and then concluding failure is the single most common misunderstanding of these drugs.
5. Number of attempts
Guidance generally suggests trying an appropriate dose several times — commonly cited as up to eight attempts — before declaring it ineffective, because anxiety about whether it will work suppresses the response early on. If it's still not working after a genuine trial, that's a real clinical finding worth reporting to your prescriber, who may adjust the dose or switch agents.
The short version
Right timing, light meal, real arousal, several attempts. Only after that is 'it doesn't work for me' a medical conclusion.
