ED Medication Side Effects: What's Normal and What Isn't

These typically appear within hours, fade as the drug clears, and often lessen with repeated use.

• Headache — the most frequently reported effect
• Facial flushing and warmth
• Nasal congestion or a stuffy nose
• Indigestion or reflux
• Back and muscle aches, more typical of tadalafil, often delayed 12–24 hours
• Mild dizziness or lightheadedness

Blurred vision or a blue tint to your vision, unusual sensitivity to light, ringing in the ears, a rash, or side effects that don't fade after the medication should have cleared. These aren't necessarily dangerous, but they warrant a dose review.

These are rare, and they are not things to sleep on.

• An erection lasting more than 4 hours (priapism) — tissue damage becomes permanent with delay
• Sudden partial or complete vision loss in one or both eyes
• Sudden hearing loss or severe ringing
• Chest pain, especially during or after sex
• Fainting, or symptoms of a severe allergic reaction like facial swelling or trouble breathing

Nitrates in any form — including recreational 'poppers' (amyl nitrite) — combined with a PDE5 inhibitor can drop blood pressure catastrophically. Riociguat carries the same contraindication. Alpha blockers for blood pressure or prostate symptoms, some antifungals, some antibiotics and certain HIV protease inhibitors require dose adjustment or spacing. Grapefruit juice raises drug levels too.

Start at the lowest effective dose your provider prescribes, give your body a few attempts before judging, avoid stacking with heavy alcohol, and tell your provider every medication and supplement you take — including the ones you don't think count.
