How Long Do ED Pills Take To Work?

The most common question about ED medication is also the least well answered online, because onset depends on the drug, the formulation, your stomach and your own physiology. Here is the honest version.
Typical onset windows
These are ranges reported in prescribing information and clinical use, not promises. Individual response varies.
- Sildenafil tablets: commonly around 30–60 minutes, and a heavy or fatty meal can delay it
- Tadalafil as-needed: commonly around 30–60 minutes, less affected by food
- Daily low-dose tadalafil: builds up over several days so there's no dosing window to time
- Rapid-dissolve tablets: designed to dissolve under the tongue without water, which some men find more convenient than swallowing a tablet
How long the effect lasts
Sildenafil's useful window is commonly around four to six hours. Tadalafil is the long one, with a window that can extend up to roughly 36 hours — which is why it earned its weekend nickname. Longer does not mean stronger; it means less clock-watching.
Things that slow it down
If a dose felt weak or late, one of these is usually why.
- A large, fatty meal shortly before dosing (especially with sildenafil)
- Heavy alcohol, which works directly against the effect you want
- Dehydration and exhaustion
- Expecting the pill to do all the work — PDE5 inhibitors require arousal to do anything
One dose is not a verdict
Guidance generally suggests trying a medication several times, at an appropriate dose and under realistic conditions, before concluding it doesn't work for you. If it still doesn't, tell your provider — dose adjustments and switching molecules are both normal next steps.
The short version
Plan around a range, not a minute. And if it consistently underperforms, that's a conversation with your provider, not a reason to double up.
