What Actually Happens in an ED Telehealth Consultation

The main barrier to treatment isn't cost or access — it's the anticipated awkwardness. Knowing the shape of the process removes most of that, and knowing what a thorough evaluation looks like helps you spot a superficial one.

The intake questionnaire

Expect questions about how long the problem has been present, whether it came on suddenly or gradually, whether you get morning erections, your full medication list, cardiovascular history, diabetes, surgeries, alcohol and tobacco use, and recent blood pressure. Several of these exist specifically to catch contraindications.

Provider review

A licensed clinician in your state reviews the answers. Depending on the service and your jurisdiction, this may be asynchronous — reviewed and responded to in writing — or a live video call. Some cases trigger a follow-up message asking for clarification or recent lab work.

Why people get declined

A service that declines nobody isn't evaluating anyone.

  • Nitrate or riociguat use
  • Recent heart attack, stroke, or unstable angina
  • Severe uncontrolled blood pressure, high or low
  • Certain drug interactions requiring in-person management
  • Symptoms suggesting an undiagnosed condition that needs an exam

After approval

The prescription goes to a licensed pharmacy and ships discreetly. Legitimate services provide a route back to the provider for follow-up questions, dose adjustments and side effects — a one-way transaction with no follow-up channel is a warning sign.

The short version

A real evaluation is detailed, asks about your heart, and is willing to say no. Look for those three things.

This article is general health information, not medical advice, and does not create a patient–provider relationship. Prescription treatment is only available after an evaluation by a licensed provider who determines it is appropriate for you. Do not take a PDE5 inhibitor if you use nitrates or riociguat. Seek emergency care for chest pain, sudden vision or hearing loss, or an erection lasting more than 4 hours. See our Important Safety Information.

Tadalafil and sildenafil are prescription medications. Treatment is only available after an evaluation by a licensed provider who determines it is appropriate for you. A compounded tadalafil/sildenafil rapid-dissolve tablet is prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacy and is not FDA-approved as a combination product; FDA does not review compounded drugs for safety, effectiveness, or quality.

Do not take this medication if you use nitrates (nitroglycerin, isosorbide) or guanylate cyclase stimulators such as riociguat — the combination can cause a sudden, unsafe drop in blood pressure. Seek emergency care for an erection lasting more than 4 hours. Not for use by anyone under 18, and not for women or children.
